Beignets: fun to eat, annoying to spell a dozen times over the course of an article, but that’s a price I’m willing to pay. Voodoo Cafe is located on Bartlett blvd, just north of Ivanhoe. They serve a variety of specialty beignets and coffee. Currently, they have the dining room closed and they’re just doing curbside, which suits me fine, but pictures of the dashboard of my Prius aren’t super exciting.
Luckily, I’ve been there in the before-times. It’s a cute little shop in a strip mall. As you might glean from the name (and the menu, really), they have a strong New Orleans influence with some cute little touches like a little mouse sized storefront in the wall.
Today, I ordered a variety of beignets. First up, the Shadowman. It’s topped with dark chocolate, almonds, and shredded coconut. This one was honestly probably our least favorite, but “Least favorite” in this application is still pretty high praise. It’s still super good, just had a lot going on.
Next up, the Muddy Zombie. This one has peanut butter, chocolate, and caramel. It was exceptionally good, the caramel really bridges the peanut butter and chocolate together in a way that makes it seem a lot more cohesive than it should with three different flavors going on. The peanut butter comes through really strong, and both Daisy and I are huge fans of peanut butter, so that likely had a lot to do with how much we liked it. If you like peanut butter, you’ll totally love this one.
As always, I saved the best for last. The unanimous favorite was the Sweet Juju, it’s dulce de leche & cinnamon. The dulce de leche has an AMAZING flavor, and the cinnamon really sets it off. Both go super well with the crispy, slightly savory flavor of the beignet itself. We honestly enjoyed all of them, but still wished we had gotten another order of just sweet juju. It’s super good. That’s gonna be my pick.
We didn’t get any coffee this time, but voodoo cafe does have some very tasty coffee. I suggest the Vietnamese. They have a pretty big variety of flavors, my usual approach is to try as many as I can because they’re all good as hell. Here are the traditional powdered sugar and the Yeti, which is coconut and sweet cream, from last time we went. The Yeti was our favorite last time.
Now my only problem is the fact that I like literally everything I’ve tried here, so I don’t know what to get next time.
