For some reason, we were in a PARTICULARLY good mood Saturday afternoon, so we decided to grab some sushi for a celebratory meal. Seemed like something that would go well with champagne. We ended up ordering from OEC Japanese near Stage and Bartlett blvd. It’s situated in a strip mall in the parking lot of the Kroger at that intersection.

I called in our order and went to pick it up. It’s a cute little place, they’re obviously take-out only right now, but I definitely want to go eat there when the pandemic is over.

I’m always a little bit cautious when ordering sushi from a strip mall sushi place in a landlocked state, so we went with all cooked stuff to test the waters. We got an order of Japanese egg rolls, an order of chicken katsu (our fail-safe for Ava), a three rolls; Shrimp Killer, Tornado, and Dynamite.

The Japanese egg rolls are fantastic. The wrappers have a lighter, more spring roll-like texture as opposed to the thick wrappers of traditional egg rolls. They’re light and delicate, and I absolutely adore them. They come with a sweet dipping sauce that I might actually just drink.

The chicken katsu is good too, the sauce for it leans almost into BBQ sauce territory. The chicken is panko breaded and very crispy on the outside, pretty much exactly what you expect from chicken katsu.

The Shrimp Killer roll was super good, it consists of tempura shrimp, cream cheese, crabstick, avocado and sweet chili sauce. I think this one was our overall favorite. The flavors all play well together, the sauce is tasty with just the right amount of heat, and the shrimp still has some crispiness too it for texture.

Next up, the Tornado roll. That would be shrimp and cream cheese on the inside, crab meat and eel sauce on the outside. Also pretty tasty. It was probably our second favorite.

Last up we got the dynamite roll; Baked and mixed scallops, shrimp, crab meat with spicy mayonnaise and eel sauce on top of a California roll. It was good, but super difficult to eat. The pieces were laid down flat with all the stuff piled on top. Maybe it works better when you eat there, but for a takeout situation, it was very hard to get a piece out without it falling apart and shedding all of its toppings.

The dynamite roll did seem to be Ava’s favorite though. She tends to take her food apart anyway, so the fact that it kinda fell apart didn’t bother her at all.

As a whole, we really enjoyed OEC. Everything tasted very fresh, service was fast and friendly, and it’s not very expensive (for sushi). We’ll definitely be back. I’d like to dine in at some point and try some sashimi and nigiri. I’ve been craving yellowtail nigiri like whoa. You guys should check this place out, and definitely get the shrimp killer roll and some Japanese egg rolls.
